Being a college student is stressful. You have classes, homework, tests, projects, papers, friends, relationships. The last thing you want is an unreliable digital setup – and this day in age, it is impossible to get by without a digital workshop. I am going to establish the best value of laptops for college.
Laptops used to be a luxury, something you would take to class to take notes while everyone else scribbled on paper. Now it is a necessity. A mobile workplace – the ability to carry with you your assignments, projects, and papers is invaluable. Not only are you able to carry everything with you, but you are also to move around your area of work – for example, if you are working on a project with another individual or a group it is far easier to do so with a mobile platform.
Choosing the right laptop for college is a challenge. There are a lot of expenses when it comes to college, and I think too many people disregard the laptop as an important expense. It is often simply viewed as a portable paper writing device. I have the benefit of being a college student in the 21st century. The times are different and they are evolving very quickly. I am here to help you understand the full uses of laptops for college students, and also to help you navigate the plethora of options to find the choice that is right for you – be you college student, or parent.
When you think about purchasing a laptop for college, you want a laptop that is going to fulfill the needs of the student, is going to be reliable, and is going easily integrate with the college. Some schools can offer better support for one type of computer over the other – in general most colleges will fully support Macs and PCs, but often you will find that the Mac integration is greater in some schools.
I’m not interested in starting a big Mac vs PC debate – one can easily and safely choose from either of these types of laptops for college. In general, most tasks that can be done on a Mac can also be done equally on a PC. Occasionally you will find software which doesn’t work on a Mac – this can happen in the Science/Math fields, and you will want to confirm the potential software that you may use before purchasing a computer. On the flip side, Macs are more integrated systems, with smoother and easier to use interfaces for the typical user – this is one of the main reasons they are favored in educational institutions.
When it comes to laptops, just like anything else, there is a certain level of value. You get what you pay for basically. If someone is offering a 500 dollar laptop, then that laptop is worth only 500 dollars, unless they feel like giving away money. Sometimes you can find a good sale deal – but keep in mind that an $800 dollar laptop, even if it going for $500 is still an $800 laptop. In terms of physical quality, stability, and support, there honestly isn’t greater established value than a Mac laptop. This is seen in that every serious laptop manufacturer is currently trying their hardest to mimic Apple’s constructions.
That isn’t to say that there aren’t PC laptops of excellent construction – they just aren’t worth going for at the same price point as the Macs (unless you need PC only software). That is to say, if you have a choice between a $2000 Macbook Pro and a $2000 PC laptop, the Macbook Pro is going to be the better value due to its physical durability in construction, reliability, and flat out support from Apple.
I will be presenting many options for PC laptops for college, in addition to my analysis of Apple laptops. As I said, I’m not interested in starting a big debate between the two, they both have their place. I will be looking into these concepts, along with different useful types of software for college students. I will also touch on the mobile workspace – including tablets and mobile phones. Stay tuned to this blog for more in depth analysis so you are armed to make the best decisions!
